Phillip Van started shooting on a sharp red-eye VHS camcorder when he was 12 years old. The son of a Vietnamese immigrant and an American, he was raised in Hawaii and Oregon. After attending Cornell University for English and Film, he studied directing at NYU Graduate Film.

His short films have screened at over 40 festivals and his thesis, High Maintenance, won over a dozen awards including a Student Academy Award, a BAFTA/LA award, a Berlin International Film Festival Talent Campus award and Delta’s Fly-In film award at Sundance. 

Named one of Filmmaker Magazine’s “25 New Faces of Independent Film” and featured in Shoot Magazine’s “Up & Coming Directors” Issue, Phillip’s commercial work has since been featured in Creativity, AdWeek, Boards, Shots as well as on MTV, Pitchfork, Stereogum and gaming sites Joystiq, Kotaku and G4tv.

He recently completed directing a live-action series for XBOX called Bright Falls. The six-part prequel to the game Alan Wake premiered on X-BOX Live and got over 4 million views. The series was featured on Adage’s “Best Ads,” in the New York Times and won 2011 One Show and D&AD yellow pencil ad awards.

Clients include: XBOX, Chevrolet, Yves Saint Laurent, BlueCross BlueShield, AXA and NBC.
